Faulty protective clothing or just providing no clothing at all an entirely preventable cause of injury in the work place. Following the implementation of the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 your employer is under a duty to provide you with protective equipment in circumstances where a risk to your health and safety cannot be controlled in other ways. The regulations require that any such equipment must:-
- Be properly assessed before use to ensure its’ suitability;
- Be properly maintained and stored;
- Come with proper instructions as to how it is safely used; and
- Be used correctly by employees (i.e. that employers ensure that their employees are using the equipment correctly).
Sadly a lack of equipment/clothing still causes injuries in the workplace and you might be entitled to compensation if your employer has been negligent.
