Silicosis

Silicosis is a work related lung condition caused by inhalation of crystalline silica dust which is the second most common mineral on the planet. It is also known as Grinder’s disease or Potter’s rot.

Symptoms include shortness of breath, fever and bluish skin (known as cyanosis) and is sometimes mistaken for fluid on the lungs (pulmonary edema), pneumonia or tuberculosis.

Typically those at risk involved any occupations that carry out cutting, breaking, crushing, drilling, grinding, or abrasive blasting and symptoms normally develop about 10 years after exposure but can be less if inhalation has been excessive. It is the most common occupational lung disease worldwide.

Those workers most at risk are in ceramics, construction, farming, foundry work, glass, mining, shipbuilding and stone cutting.
